About this event

Join us for our 2nd Annual Read-Out! A read-out for banned books is an event where people read passages from books that have been banned or challenged in the past. The goal is to raise awareness about censorship and the importance of intellectual freedom. You can participate by reading from a banned book of your choice out loud. We encourage you to also discuss your personal feelings about the book you read from and why it's important to be heard. Of course, come and show support and listen to what everyone shares if you prefer.

Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read and highlights the value of free and open access to information. The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is “Let Freedom Read”. The American Library Association believes the theme captures what's at stake for our democracy: that the safety of our right to speak is directly proportional to our right to read.

Feel free to bring a snack and/or beverage to share with others also. We will be gathering at Black Cat Books, a locally owned, independent bookstore.
