Five members of the Corpus Christi City Council are elected from "single member" districts with defined geographical boundaries. The Mayor and three other Council members are elected "at large" by all city voters. Dr. Huerta will discuss the pros and cons of (1) the current system, and (2) a system with 8 single member districts with only the Mayor elected at large.
Dr. Huerta will provide an update on how effective City of Corpus
Christi’s modified single-member electoral system is for minority representation. The LWVCCA business portion of the meeting will follow
from 6:30-7:00 pm, with League President Kathryn Oler presiding.
The League’s current position statement on Method of Electing
City Council Members (developed in 1981) is under review.
